IS IT FUN TO READ OR NOT?

Is it Fun to Read or Not? We are going to provide the answer to this question in today’s episode of naijaschoolzblog.

Most students think reading is hard work and boring, actually it’s the opposite. Think about it: how come we don’t get bored when we read our favorite novel, sports gist, fashion, gossip, poems, and so on? The answers are simple; we think it’s “fun.” We love reading them because it excites us. This may be true also, but the truth is that when we tell ourselves that a particular subject (sports, gossip, fashion, etc.) is fun, then it is.

Random Fun Fact: Did you know that an average person reads around 200 to 300 words per minute? However, speed reading experts can read at a rate of up to 1000 words per minute or more!

By practicing speed reading, you may train your brain to digest words more rapidly and effectively. It frequently incorporates strategies like scanning, skimming, and using your peripheral vision to process more data simultaneously.

While being able to read quickly can be helpful, it’s crucial to realize that not all reading materials lend themselves to this method of reading. Some texts need close attention and consideration, making them unsuitable for a quick reading strategy.

IS IT FUN TO READ OR NOT?

The mind is a powerful tool, and whatever we want it to think or believe, it happens. So what’s the takeaway, you may ask? The takeaway here is to put your mind in a state where everything you read is fun. How can one achieve this? Well, it might take some time for you to be able to program your mind, but here are a few things to do before reading a “boring” book:

  1. Read your favorite book first: Reading that book that interests you could relax your mind, thereby putting you in a state where you can digest a lot of information before your mind shuts down. Shuts down in the sense that you are now aware that you are reading something that doesn’t excite you. So read something you love first, then introduce your school book after a while when you’re in a state of euphoria.
  2. Have a snack or two with you: Yes, eating can actually calm you down when you read a book you don’t really like. Pick up your favorite snack and munch on it while reading.
  3. Set a goal: Determine why you are reading this particular book and what you hope to gain from it. Are you reading for entertainment, to learn something new, or to gain a deeper understanding of a particular topic? Having a clear goal in mind can help you focus your attention and stay motivated.
  4. Remove distractions: Find a quiet place to read where you won’t be interrupted. Turn off your phone or put it on silent mode, and avoid checking email or social media until you’ve finished reading. You’ll be surprised how much more you can absorb when you eliminate distractions.
  5. Get comfortable: Make sure you’re physically comfortable before you start reading. Choose a comfortable chair or couch, and make sure you have a good lighting so you don’t strain your eyes.

Keep in mind that some of these tips may not work for you; they worked for me. The trick is to keep an open mind. Your brain has the power to hold a lot of information without erupting like a volcano. So with this little piece, I hope you find your worst subject exciting to read.
